1,386 miles. Two planes, 3 trains, and 2 busses and we are in New York. I'm sure there is an easier way, but our adventure started at 4:50am. Our first challenge (thanks to a 20 minute wait for the satelitte parking bus) was making our flight. Thanks to the Delta staff, we ran on the plane, they closed the doors and we were off (cue the James Bond theme - we are the Kellys. Patrick, Amy and Brynn Kelly)
Five hours, another plane and one train later we were able to rendezvous with Abuela/Daphne/Mom in Alexandria, VA. After some deft driving maneuvers, she whisked us away to Coco Rico for a quick lunch (a serious upgrade from the planned Silver Diner). A to short a visit, goodbyes and kisses to Brynn, and Amy's brief turn of nostalgia for her former work site we were on the bus headed for NYC.
It was time for the comic relief and it was supplied by our friend Jeremy Anderson, who was texting us quotes from Planes, Trains and Automobiles (“There's no way on earth we're going to get out of here tonight. We'd have more luck playing pickup sticks with our butt-cheeks than we will getting a flight out of here before daybreak.”) and the safety video on the bus which was narrated by their owner, who Patrick was sure he had seen in an episode of the Sopranos. ("When you are in the head, make sure you hold on to the handrails. Capish?"). Through the laughs we enjoyed the scenery from Georgetown, to Amy's old stomping grounds at American University, to New Jersey's smokestacks, to the Manhattan skyline.
Soon, being a relative term, we were in New York. We never get tired of this city. One more train ride and we were in Brooklyn at our B&B and in a full flop sweat. Just a block away we met Micheal (see photo) and had some wonderful wine and cheese at his "diner?", Delroy's. Great food and a nice peaceful end to the day.
Cue closing credits on day one. We will post actual videos soon.
